Tiger is the son of Earl Woods, who was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, and his wife, Kultida, from Thailand.
He was given the nickname Tiger after a Vietnamese soldier and friend of his father, Vuong Dang Phong.
Tiger first registered an interest in golf age 6 months, imitating his father’s swing.
He played in his first pro tournament – the Los Angeles Open – at age 16 and won six USGA national championships before turning professional in August 1996.
Tiger has won 15 majors, second only to Jack Nicklaus, and 82 PGA TOUR events, which is tied first all time with Sam Snead.
