Navigator
A lighthouse will help navigate players down this hole, and off the tee they will use the three fairway bunkers in the distance as directional aides.
The only chance at reaching this green in two is taking an aggressive line off the tee challenging the ocean edge. Players that go too far left will be forced to lay up with their second shot, while too far right and they’ll be verging on disaster.
For teams that green light a gutsy second shot into the island green, shots hit long will be caught by a good-sized catcher’s mitt behind the green, but players will be faced with a difficult pitch shot.
HOLE STRATEGY
Hole Designer: Beau Welling Design
Beau Welling talks us through the thought process on Navigator and discusses how our teams may approach it on matchnight:
Beau says: "We really tried to think through the lens of TGL match play for this hole and hopefully it’s not just enough to execute good shots on Navigator, players and teams will also have to make good strategic decisions.
"The hole is a long par 5 but it can be shortened if players take on more risk. In essence, it’s a Cape hole. Perhaps even a double Cape hole.
"Teams are on a peninsula sticking out into the ocean and must play over the ocean cliffs onto a fairway that constricts with bunkers on the left. The more that players bite off on their tee shot, the more reasonable it is going to be to go for the green in two. It’s a classic Cape hole tee shot.
"But then, the green is located on an island just off the mainland. There’s ample room on the mainland to lay up and pitch onto the green but if you have taken on enough risk on the tee shot, you will have the ability to go for the green in two."
