Justin Thomas is one of golf’s great shotmakers. The 15-time PGA TOUR winner is an elite irons player with two majors in his trophy cabinet – the 2017 and 2022 PGA Championships. There will almost certainly be more on the way soon.
Part of a great generation of young American golfers, JT is now set to take to the arena for the first season of TGL alongside most of the world’s Top 10 and several of his good friends.
He’s also set to be an integral member of the U.S. team that tees it up at Marco Golf and Country Club near Rome, Italy for the 2023 Ryder Cup later this year. JT has a stellar team golf record – 16-5-3 for the U.S. combined across two Ryder Cups and three Presidents Cups – so it’s safe to say he’ll be a popular teammate when TGL gets started in January.
“Team golf events have always been highlights throughout my career as the us-vs.-them mentality fuels my competitive spirit,” Thomas said. “I am proud to be a foundational player of TGL, and while I am eager to test my skills once the league launches, I am eager to be a voice alongside Tiger [Woods] and Rory [McIlroy] in helping to shape the league and help expand the audience for the sport I love.”
Growing the game of golf is part of the appeal for Thomas, who was introduced to the sport by his father, Mike Thomas, the head professional at Harmony Landing Country Club in Goshen, Kentucky.
“I think the game of golf is still doing really, really well, and for us to try to take these opportunities to just widen the horizons,” Thomas added. “For the people that are physically there watching and the people that are watching on TV, just some more enjoyment and excitement to the game that will hopefully just continue to take it up and up.”
Thomas is one of 12 PGA TOUR stars confirmed for the first season of TGL, which begins a 15-week regular season in early 2025. There will be six teams of three golfers competing to be named the first ever TGL Champions. So far, two teams have been announced: Los Angeles Golf Club and TGL Boston. Tennis superstar Serena Williams, her husband and tech entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian, Serena’s sister Venus, and Serena and Alexis’ daughter, Olympia, are the co-owners of the Los Angeles Golf Club, while Fenway Sports Group is leading the Boston team.
Team rosters for LAGC, Boston and the other remaining four teams will be confirmed later this year.
