One of the stars of Team Europe's success in Rome, Shane Lowry has become the latest to announce his intention to compete in the first season of TGL, launching in early 2025.
Shane Lowry's European teammate Tommy Fleetwood has also signed up for TGL presented by SoFi, as has South Korean star Tom Kim. Their commitments bolster the current confirmed list of TGL golfers ahead of January's launch at SoFi Center on the campus of Palm Beach State College.
Born in an Irish town named Clara, almost exactly in the middle of the country, Lowry has followed in the footsteps of many famous countrymen in the sport of golf.
In 2009, he won the Irish Open on the European Tour (now DP World Tour) as an amateur, becoming just the third amateur ever to win on the European Tour and just the fifth Irish winner of the country’s national open.
Ten years later, he won the Open Championship at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.
And from early 2025, he’ll be competing with many other top PGA TOUR stars when he tees it up at SoFi Center for the first season of TGL in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
“Everything I’ve heard about TGL is really intriguing. Between Ryder Cups and World Cups, I’ve always enjoyed playing with a partner or for a team. It’s great to see golf being creative and trying new things. I imagine this will be a lot of fun,” said Lowry.
Here’s the list of confirmed TGL players:
- Tiger Woods
- Rory McIlroy
- Justin Thomas
- Collin Morikawa
- Matt Fitzpatrick
- Justin Rose
- Adam Scott
- Max Homa
- Xander Schauffele
- Rickie Fowler
- Billy Horschel
- Tommy Fleetwood
- Tom Kim
- Shane Lowry
For Lowry, sport runs in the family. His father Brendan was a famous Gaelic football star for the County Offaly team who competed and won the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. In fact, Lowry often wears black and white on the golf course to represent his hometown team’s Gaelic football colors.
But, among competition from rugby, soccer, his father’s sport Gaelic football and the ferocious Irish sport of hurling, it was his uncles who introduced a teenage Lowry to the game he came to love, golf. Within a year of playing, Lowry was a 12 handicap. A few months later it was in the single digits.
“The excitement of team golf was on display at last week’s Ryder Cup and we are thrilled to carry some of that momentum into the TGL season. The momentum and excitement for TGL continues to soar,” said TMRW Sports Group and TGL CEO Mike McCarley.
