The Finals Series delivered plenty of drama and crowned the first-ever champion, with Atlanta Drive GC taking the trophy with a clean sweep after Tuesday’s 4-3 comeback victory over New York Golf Club in Match 2.
Billy Horschel’s 18-foot birdie putt on No. 14 gave Atlanta its first lead of the night and ultimately kickstarted the title celebrations as Horschel, Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas and Lucas Glover hoisted the SoFi Cup following a match in which they trailed 3-0 with just four holes to play.
Prior to sinking what would prove to be the decisive putt, Horschel called his shot standing next to Cantlay with just a few holes remaining.
“I said, ‘this is going to be an epic comeback,’ and it was,” Horschel said. “It was unbelievable.”
Here are the best reactions from players on both sides of the inaugural Finals Series.
Horschel's Putt
Horschel, on the Hammer throw and putt at No. 14 with Atlanta trailing 3-2: “I walked up on the green and I put my ball down. Next thing you know, there was a Hammer thrown. I didn’t know who actually threw the Hammer ... (then) realized it was us. Obviously debated it and (Thomas) comes over and I said, ‘Listen, if they accept, I’m making this putt.’ ... (Thomas) gave me the perfect read, and I did a great job of following his direction and the putt went in. Then, once again, a blackout moment happened.”
On the Team
Cantlay on clinching the victory with a birdie at No. 15: “I like being in that spot, in that anchor spot, and the boys played great tonight. No surprise, Billy Horschel made another putt worth two points and that’s kind of been all season. These guys have played great, and it’s a pleasure to be with them.”
Glover on how he would describe his team: “Good ... really good. Competitive as hell.”
On the First Season
Thomas: “It’s completely exceeded my expectations. It’s been a blast, and the competitiveness once the playoffs got here – I’m sure (New York) would say the same – that they were different last night. It was not chippy, but it just was competitive. We wanted to win.”
Horschel: “This is something that’s different than what we play every week of the year. We want to come in here and compete. We want to come in here and entertain. That’s what this is about. I think we do a great job of that. We’re ying and yanging off each other. None of us is afraid to step back and let someone else lead in that moment. So we do a great job of feeding off each other, and it’s been great to be with all of these guys.”
Thomas: “I didn’t necessarily ever leave a match or a time where it was anything but exciting and fun and I really enjoyed it. It’s nice to be ending the season up here with the trophy.”
Horschel: “I remember coming into the arena in November and walking out and I was just in awe. I couldn’t imagine what I was seeing. I described it like a football player walking into Mercedes-Benz Stadium ... Steph Curry walking out at Oracle Arena, stuff like that. Never imagined we’d be playing golf in an arena with a big simulator and people and music and chanting. Yeah, it’s been really cool.”
New York Golf Club On Finals Series
Rickie Fowler: “Billy and the guys, last night and tonight, they made more putts than us, and that’s a lot of what it came down to.”
Xander Schauffele: “They [Atlanta Drive] earned it for sure.”
Cameron Young: “I think the level of emotion and intensity in the match tonight and last night was really high. Not that it wasn’t all year, but there’s just a different level. Just like playoffs in any other sport.”
On The First Season
Schauffele: “Overall, I think we’re sort of in our feels right now. ... I was on the sidelines for some, played in some and lost and won. I wouldn’t call the New York season a bland one. We got a little bit of everything, which was enjoyable.”
Fowler: “It’s been a lot of fun. And obviously now in the moment with where we are, it sucks. But at the same time, have to look back and look at the 0-2 start. It’s been fun to grow with these guys and all get better and put ourselves in this position. ... Happy we made it to this point and wish we could have had a few more putts go in. They were close matches that both came down to the last hole.”
