Wellesley, MA native and rising PGA TOUR standout, Michael Thorbjornsen joins Rory McIlroy and Keegan Bradley in Boston's Opening Match of the 2026 Season on January 2 at 7pm ET on ESPN2.
Michael Thorbjornsen will join Rory McIlroy and Keegan Bradley as the Designated Alternate for Boston Common Golf for its first match on Friday, Jan. 2 against Los Angeles Golf Club at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN2, and the ESPN app.
“I’m excited to have Michael join us for our first match. You often see young talent coming up, but it’s rare to experience the future of the game as a teammate,” said Rory McIlroy. “Michael brings elite talent and a real connection to Boston Common Golf. I’m looking forward to having him with us on January 2.”
TGL was created to be complementary to player schedules. By design, each TGL team has a four-player roster to address scenarios where players are unable to participate due to scheduling or injury. If a team is unable to field a three-player roster, TGL has processes in place to add a Designated Alternate to a roster for a match, as needed. To be eligible for TGL, players must be PGA TOUR members in good standing. Thorbjornsen is playing as a Designated Alternate to fill in for Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama, who are unable to attend the match due to scheduling.
“I was back in Wellesley recently for my high school reunion, and it really reminded me where this journey started,” said Michael Thorbjornsen. “To now have the chance to represent Boston and take the field of play on January 2 alongside Rory and Keegan is incredibly special. These are players I’ve looked up to throughout my development, and the opportunity to compete with them as teammates feels like such a full circle moment. I’ve seen what Boston Common Golf and TGL are building, and the intensity, innovation, and team aspect fit exactly how I love to compete. I’m excited to learn from this group of world-class golfers and bring everything I have whenever the team needs me.”
“We’re incredibly excited to have Michael as a Designated Alternate for our first match of the TGL season,” said Mark Lev, President & CEO, Boston Common Golf. “We’ve been watching him closely and getting to know him over the past year, and we’ve been consistently impressed not only by his elite talent, but by his character and work ethic. As a New Englander, Michael brings a connection to this community that our fans will truly appreciate, and he embodies the type of player we want representing Boston for our first match of the season. His power, creativity, and poise under pressure will be great assets to our team, and as part of his role we’re especially excited to have him support our efforts to make golf more accessible for young people across the region.”
