Los Angeles Golf Club handed Boston Common Golf its second loss of the season with an impressive 6-2 win on Tuesday night at SoFi Center.

Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose – the trio of golfers playing for LAGC this week – won the first three holes over Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley and Rory McIlroy and never looked back, as they cruised to victory.

Let’s take a look at a few takeaways:

1. Early Lead Pays Off Again

LAGC took the lead after the first hole and went on to win. Teams that take the lead first are now 4-1 on the season. LAGC started and ended the match with the Hammer and was never tempted to use it because of the early 3-0 lead after three holes.

This frustrated Kegan Bradley and the Ballfrogs, but there was never a reason to play it because Boston never posed a real threat. So far, there has been big importance placed on a fast start and that should factor into the strategy and aggressiveness going forward.

2. Boston In Tough Spot

The Ballfrogs were not bad early in the match, but LAGC was precise with their irons and birdied two of the first three to put distance between themselves and their opponents.

It’s true that players (unsurprisingly) seem to be adapting nicely to the nuances of playing golf inside SoFi Center, and that the level of play has picked up a notch from the first few weeks. Through two matches, the Ballfrogs have made just four bogeys or worse in 30 holes and yet are still 0-1-1.

3. Boston Putters Go Cold

In the first match, the Ballfrogs made three putts of 10 feet or longer. On Tuesday? Only one putt made from over 3 feet, and it came on the first hole, which was a hole they lost.

Morikawa said after the match that the greens in SoFi Center are difficult to learn and Boston Common Golf found that the case, going painfully close on several occasions.

4. LAGC The Early Leaders

LAGC is the first squad to get to 2-0 and has been dominant in doing so. They have held a lead for 29 of the 30 holes they have played and did so on Tuesday without arguably their standout player from the first week in Sahith Theegala.

I went into this season believing The Bay Golf Club and Boston Common Golf had the best chance to reach the championship match in March, but that has shifted to TBGC and LAGC for me after five weeks of play.

5. Star of the night

Collin Morikawa – The two-time major winner hit his approach on the first hole to 4 feet, and Justin Rose made it for birdie. Morikawa then hit his approach at the fifth hole to 6 feet, and Rose made it for birdie. For two players who have opposed one another at Ryder Cups, they looked comfortable doing this as teammates.

Morikawa, when on, is probably the best iron player in the world, and that showed throughout the match on Tuesday night. He is apparently one of the best dancers on LAGC, too, which I was unaware of (and perhaps his teammates were unaware of as well).
