Kyle Porter kicks off his preseason preview of TGL presented by SoFi with a closer look at New York Golf Club.

New York Golf Club almost certainly has the largest collection of laid-back personalities of any team in TGL. When Matt Fitzpatrick is arguably your most intense competitor, you know the team is about as cool and calm as it gets.

Joining Fitzpatrick on NYGC are Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele and maybe the chillest of them all, Cameron Young. But it’s not just a vibes thing with this team because they may have the best collection of all-around talent in the league.

Two-time major winner Xander Schauffele ranks in the top- 20 in every strokes gained category worldwide over the last year, which means he's competing at an absurdly high level.

TAKE THE QUIZ: Find Out Which Team You Should Root For

Let’s start with Schauffele and take a look at how NYGC plans on taking home the first-ever TGL title, starting with a Jan. 7 matchup against The Bay Golf Club on ESPN at 9 p.m. ET.

Xander Schauffele

Schauffele has taken a step that many stars never take, from a great player to a potential all-time great trajectory. And he did it by adding speed to a game that was already top 10 in the world.

Role on the team: Schauffele will be leaned on as someone with a reputation for big moments after what he did on the final nine holes at the 2024 PGA Championship and Open Championship. He has the skills and the temperament to keep cool under pressure.

One thing that excites me: Like many players in this league, I’m hopeful that Schauffele’s personality – which is fun, but often quiet during big-time competitive events – gets to shine in the unique format.

One stat to remember: 2 – That’s how many players have ranked in the top 50 in strokes gained off the tee, on approach, around the green and with the putter. It's just Schauffele and McIlroy. And Schauffele ranked in the top 15 in each category, according to Data Golf.

Cameron Young

In some ways, this could be the perfect setup for Young, who is a ball-striking menace.

Role on the team: Young's prowess off the tee will be crucial for NYGC. He was slightly off last year (by his own incredibly high standards) and yet he was still among the best in the world. That's pretty remarkable. His length is obvious – he averaged 309 yards per drive on the PGA TOUR in 2024 – but he’s more accurate than folks may think, and that will mean NYGC likely uses him for holes requiring the best driving in the league’s alternate shot setup.

One thing that excites me: Young is one of those guys who always seems to have more in the tank. We may see some truly outrageous driving data off the tee when it comes to Young’s numbers when TGL gets going and Young’s NYGC team takes on Ludvig Åberg’s The Bay Golf Club on Jan. 7.

One stat to remember: 2 – That’s how many players in this league have gained more strokes off the tee than Cam Young has over the last two years (only McIlroy and Åberg).

Rickie Fowler

After a great 2023, Fowler ended 2024 on a high note in the fall with three consecutive top 25s and plenty of reason for optimism going into January.

Role on the team: The all-around game Fowler brings to the table means you can put him in any situation and believe he’s going to find success.

One thing that excites me: Rickie is so likable. In a golf world where stars are getting younger and younger, it's a good reminder of the consistently great career Fowler has put together over the last 15 years.

One stat to remember: 60% – Of Fowler’s five top 25s in 2024, 60% of them came in his last three starts, suggesting that he’s on the right track heading into TGL.

Matt Fitzpatrick

Perhaps the most prepared man in golf will likely be the most prepared player come Jan. 7. With some of the most creative holes in the sport in play, Fitzpatrick should be well suited to attack, which will be a benefit not only to him but also his team.

Role on the team: Fitzpatrick is a great all-around player. He has eliminated whatever gaps existed in his game early in his career with persistent work on speed and strength training over the past few years. He is meticulous with his preparation and should also offer high-level skills when it comes to the ever-changing green in SoFi Center.

One thing that excites me: Fitzpatrick has great team golf experience from three Ryder Cups and it will be interesting to see the team dynamic on NYGC with tons of talent in the mix. It may seem odd with a veteran like Fowler and a superstar like Schauffele, but Fitzpatrick might end up being the most vocal on strategy thanks to his attention to detail.

One stat to remember: 6 – That’s how many consecutive years Fitzpatrick has gained at least two strokes putting per tournament against the rest of the world. An insane, insane number. The GreenZone better watch out.

Why you should root for them

This is a team that could show off how golf is meant to be played from an all-around perspective. They have no gaps, from driving to approach play to short game. It will be fun to watch all that translate to SoFi Center.
