Kyle Porter recaps an entertaining night at SoFi Center as The Bay Golf Club goes back to the top of the SoFi Cup Standings.

As the four-team playoff bracket begins to take shape, things went to form on Tuesday as The Bay Golf Club stayed undefeated and handled Jupiter Links Golf Club 6-3 in SoFi Center.

JLGC, which remains outside of the top four in the SoFi Cup Standings, kept it close early, but a pivotal 9th hole ultimately led to a deficit they could not overcome.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: All To Play For In Final Week of Regular Season

There are plenty of playoff implications and other takeaways with one week of the regular season remaining.

1. Dr. Chipinski

Min Woo Lee calling himself Dr. Chipinski always makes me laugh. Lee chipped in from 24 feet to win the 6th hole and take a 2-1 lead that would not be relinquished. Then he nearly chipped in on the 8th hole with a Hammer on the line. From 22 feet away, his chip lipped out and TBGC had to settle for a tied hole right before winning a big three-point hole after a double Hammer at the 9th.

The amusing part is that Lee and his teammates have come to expect this kind of thing as Lee was casually calling himself Dr. Chipinski on the broadcast.

2. Double Hammer

The double Hammer is something I’ve been waiting on all year, and TBGC played it perfectly at the 9th. The thing about sunk costs is that they’re sunk, but it’s extremely difficult to admit, especially with a shot clock rolling and a referee staring at you for a decision.

In JLGC’s discussion about whether they should accept TBGC’s second Hammer on the 9th hole, you could hear the indecision among the Jupiter team. TBGC stole a point there by flipping the script and putting Jupiter into a difficult position after one of the best shots of the entire year from Min Woo on the approach.

3. Boston celebrates

Despite a loss on Monday evening, Boston Common Golf was the big winner on Tuesday. The loss by Jupiter Links keeps Boston in the playoff hunt going into next week.

Here are the scenarios: If New York Golf Club beats the Ballfrogs on Monday night, NYGC is in the playoffs no matter what JLGC does against Atlanta Drive on Tuesday. If Boston Common Golf beats NYGC on Monday and wins at least four more holes than NYGC, they can sneak into the final spot with a JLGC loss against the Atlanta Drive. The other three teams are already guaranteed a playoff spot.

4. TBGC quietly rolling

TBGC became the first team to four wins as they moved to 4-0-0 with the victory and into the No. 1 seed in the playoff standings. That’s not necessarily surprising as they were one of my two picks to make the SoFi Cup Finals Series before the season started (Boston Common Golf was the other), but the mix and match of their players has been awesome.

They all bring different skills to the table, and there are no gaps as evidenced by the fact that they were missing Ludvig Åberg on Tuesday and still put up an impressive performance.

Star of the night

Tom Kim

Tom Kim is so captivating, even in a loss. He jawed and pointed at the crowd after winning JLGC’s only Triples point with a putt on the 5th hole. Then on the 8th hole, he hit a filthy chip from 38 yards to 3 feet after dropping it over a ridge.

He proceeded to take his hat off and whirl it in the air like he was James Braid marching to victory at an early 1900s Open Championship. Compelling, enthralling theater.
