Stats expert Justin Ray breaks down what Jackson Koivun will bring to Motor City Golf Club as he joins Brooks Koepka for the team's inaugural 2027 season.
With its initial signing of five-time major winner Brooks Koepka, Motor City Golf Club acquired a foundational roster piece with championship credibility. Its next move as TGL’s first expansion club is to add one of the most exciting young talents the game has seen this decade.

Fresh off his brilliant performance at the Presidents Cup, 21-year-old Jackson Koivun is TGL’s newest player and Koepka’s first teammate with Motor City. The former number one ranked amateur in the world, Koivun isn’t a prospect: He’s already proven he can win at the highest level.
Let’s break down what Koivun will bring to SoFi Center and the Motor City Golf Club roster this coming season.
AMATEUR SUPERSTAR
Koivun recently wrapped up one of the most accomplished men’s amateur golf careers in decades. In February at the Amer Ari Invitational, he became the first player in NCAA history to record multiple rounds of 62 or better in the same tournament. At 20-under-par, his 36-hole score broke the previous NCAA record of 18-under held by Tiger Woods at the 1996 Pac-10 Championship.
Koivun wrapped up his Auburn career by winning six of his last ten starts. His 11 tournament victories obliterated the old program record by five. He also set Auburn program records for top-10 finishes (34) and match play won-loss record (13-4-1). His ’25-26 season scoring average of 68.2 broke the NCAA single-season record, previously held by Collin Morikawa of Los Angeles Golf Club.
When Koivun won his third consecutive SEC Championship in April, he became the first player to win the prestigious title three years in a row since LSU’s Mac McLendon did it from 1965-67. Koivun then became the first men’s golfer in SEC history to win the Player of the Year Award three times.
And while dominating the amateur ranks, Koivun still had time to flash his enormous potential on the game’s biggest stage. In 2025, he finished in the top-10 in three consecutive PGA Tour starts, the first amateur to achieve that since Hall of Famer Ken Venturi in 1956.
RAPID PRO ASCENT
In just his third start as a professional, Koivun won this summer’s 3M Open on the PGA Tour, holding off world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler by three strokes. His 2026 PGA Tour season scoring average of 69.13 would rank second among all players if he had enough rounds played to officially qualify.
Koivun has hit 74.8% of his fairways and 73.9% greens in regulation this season on Tour. Among qualified players, only one (Ben Kohles) is currently hitting both of those benchmarks.
Koivun is averaging a stellar 1.17 strokes gained tee-to-green in PGA Tour rounds in 2026. To put that into perspective, only three qualified individuals have averaged more this season: Scheffler, Si Woo Kim and New York Golf Club’s Matt Fitzpatrick. In 18 career PGA Tour starts, including those in his amateur days, Koivun has finished in the top-10 one-third of the time (six) while missing only three cuts.
TEAM SUCCESS
At Medinah, Koivun was the first player to start a year without a tour card and play in that season’s Presidents Cup since Jordan Spieth in 2013. You certainly wouldn’t be able to tell that by his play: Despite being the youngest of the 24 competitors, Koivun was the only player to leave Illinois undefeated. In singles, Koivun knocked off Si Woo Kim, the top-ranked player on the International side.
It certainly wasn’t the first time Koivun found success in team golf. In addition to leading Auburn to NCAA Championship victories in 2024 and 2026, Koivun starred for winning American Junior Presidents Cup, Arnold Palmer Cup and Walker Cup teams. Koivun’s through-the-bag skillset, coupled with ferocious competitiveness and will to win, make him an enviable asset in any team setting.
KOEPKA & KOIVUN COLLAB
While the Koepka signing gave Motor City an identity, the addition of Koivun quickly expands the possibilities for the club in its inaugural season. Perhaps no player in his generation has played his best golf under the brightest lights quite like Koepka. What Koivun showed the world in his Presidents Cup debut – taking down the top-ranked International player in singles when his team began the day three points back – is reminiscent of that kind of Koepka clutch gene.

At his best, Koepka has been a dominant iron player, separating himself by being more precise in the toughest championship conditions. Koivun’s early statistical returns suggest some of that same high-quality approach play. This season on the PGA Tour, Koivun is averaging inside 29 feet on approach shots from the fairway. Not only would that be the best on Tour if he played enough rounds to officially qualify, it’s a full three-and-a-half feet better than the Tour mean.
