Kyle Porter continues his preseason preview with a closer look at Jupiter Links Golf Club.

Since the 2020 November Masters, Tiger Woods has played around 500 holes of PGA TOUR and major championship golf. That comes out to roughly 120 holes per year.

In the inaugural season of TGL presented by SoFi, Jupiter Links could play more than 100 holes (depending on performance), meaning that we could see one of the greatest golfers of all time play nearly as much from January-March in TGL as he has averaged over the last four years.

This, of course, is part of the appeal as Woods will be the leader of Jupiter Links Golf Club alongside his three teammates: Max Homa, Kevin Kisner and Tom Kim.

That quartet represents an interesting mix of skillsets as they prepare for their January 14 debut against Los Angeles Golf Club live on ESPN.

Iron play looks to be by far the biggest strength of Jupiter Links Golf Club. Homa and Kim are two of the better iron players of the last three years, and Woods is probably the best iron player… ever.

TAKE THE QUIZ: Find Out Which Team You Should Root For

That leads right into the other big strength for JLGC, which is short game. Kisner is the poster boy for this team’s short game prowess. Homa and Woods are great too, while Kim has gained strokes putting in two of his last three PGA TOUR seasons.

So I expect that part of the team’s game to shine when it comes time in the GreenZone at SoFi Center.

Let’s take a closer look at each of the four members of this team, starting with Tiger.

Tiger Woods

In one way, Woods is a bit of an unknown going into the season given how little competitive golf he has played lately. Still, I suspect he will thrive in this environment given that his most difficult task – actually walking around the golf course – has been mitigated by playing indoors at SoFi Center.

Role on the team: Woods – in addition to being the greatest iron player and probably the best putter in golf history – is an elite course manager. He will be invaluable to this team when it comes to decision making. Players will be able to interact constantly throughout matches and will discuss nearly every shot with one another. Woods should be amazing at this, and his teammates will be totally bought in to everything he says.

One thing that excites me: That leads right in perfectly. There is no part of golf that Woods' genius does not touch, and nobody – I mean nobody – enjoys talking golf more than Woods.

Hopefully he assumes a part-coach, part-teacher, part-guru role within JLGC, and we get him and Homa or him and Kim talking about how to hit held-off 4 irons into an island green.

Woods will be brilliant in a role like this.

One stat to remember: 0 – That is how many TGL players will attract a bigger audience than Woods. He is the most compelling figure in golf history, and I’m ecstatic to tune in and watch him hit different types of golf shots in what will be a brand-new environment for everyone.

Max Homa

Homa remains one of the best iron players in the game and has an underrated short game. In a lot of ways, he’s a facsimile of what Woods was when he was playing some of his best golf. That is not to say that Max Homa is Tiger Woods, but that, at least stylistically and from the perspective of their skillsets, they are similar.

Role on the team: If Woods is the wise sage, Homa is the heart and soul of any team he plays on. He has so much energy and is so uplifting to be around, and it will be interesting to see how that plays out in Woods’ presence.

One thing that excites me: I have said this before, but nobody is better at explaining pro golf than Max Homa. If you have heard Homa on podcasts or YouTube, you know that he’s as good as it gets when it comes to translating what world class professionals are attempting to do to those of us who are not world class professionals.

One stat to remember: 8.5 – The number of points Homa has won out of a possible 12 at the last three Presidents Cups and Ryder Cups. He’s a tremendous match play player, and I expect more of the same for JLGC this season.

Tom Kim

The book on Kim is that he’s extraordinarily accomplished at a young age (when the season starts, Kim will be only 22-years-old. It will be interesting to see how Kim, who is not as long off the tee as some others, plays some of the unique hole designs.

Role on the team: There are some true characters on this squad. Homa and Kisner are big personalities, Tiger is one of the most magnetic athletes of all time and yet somehow Kim may usurp them all. He will almost certainly defer to Woods and Co. to some extent, but he will get his moments as well.

One thing that excites me: The shot clock is going to be fun and it will be interesting to see how he handles the 40 seconds in JLGC’s matches.

One stat to remember: 2 – That’s how many players, in the last 80 years, have won twice on the PGA TOUR before turning 21. Both of them are on this team. One is Kim, and the other is a 15-time major winner.

Kevin Kisner

Kisner has recently started to take on the role of broadcaster in addition to player on the PGA TOUR. That sets him up well for the mic’d up component of TGL. He’s still capable of magic around the greens too, and because teams will be playing three-player alternate shot for the first nine holes, Kisner will likely play a massive role for JLGC.

Role on the team: We know he’ll talk a lot. Some of it will likely be coaching, much of it will probably be directed at opponents. Kisner has so much beneficial experience, and as a shorter hitter himself, he will be well positioned to help Kim with his game.

One thing that excites me: This is one of the teams that will strategize the most. They will probably try to make sure Kisner putts a large amount in the alternate shot portion of the competition (first nine holes). I’m excited to see how that strategy plays out if they do it.

One stat to remember: 13 – that’s how many years (out of the last 14) that Kisner has gained strokes putting, according to Data Golf.

Why You Should Root for Them

JLGC will be among the most likable teams in TGL. As I noted earlier, they have massive personalities that will shine through on TV. Kisner and Woods are dry and amusing, and Homa and Kim will be magnetic. This honestly might end up being both the funniest team in the league and the most fun to root for. Plus, they have Tiger Woods.
