New York Golf Club returns to SoFi Center Tuesday night to take on Atlanta Drive GC for the team's debut in TGL presented by SoFi.

The match gets underway at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN and also streams on ESPN+. In case you need a quick primer, let’s dive into the basics of a match.

TV & STREAMING: How To Watch TGL In Your Country

TGL Explained

Three players from each team go head-to-head in a 15-hole match featuring two different formats – nine holes of Triples and six holes of Singles – across a selection of custom-designed holes.

Triples is an alternate-shot format where players will take turns teeing off from hole-to-hole and rotate hitting shots until the hole is finished. Individual players will go head-to-head in a predetermined rotation over the six Singles holes.

TGL 101: Everything you need to know about season 1

Every hole is worth one point unless the Hammer is played (more on that below). The team with the most points at the end of the match wins.

Atlanta Drive holds the honor on Tuesday and will tee off first and start with the Hammer, which raises the stakes of a hole by one point when played and accepted. The other team then takes possession of the Hammer and could choose to throw it on the same hole, making the hole worth three points, or hold on to it until later in the match.

Teams can decline the Hammer but by doing so concede the hole and the points on offer. However, teams can’t decline the Hammer when it is thrown before the first tee shot on a given hole. As Tiger Woods did last week for Jupiter Links.

The match will go to Overtime if tied after 15 holes, with teams competing in a best two-out-of-three closest-to-the-pin competition to determine the winner.

Lineups

New York Golf Club: Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler

Atlanta Drive GC: Justin Thomas, Billy Horschel, Patrick Cantlay

Playing Order Reveal

Here’s the order in which players will tee off for their teams:

SINGLES

3 Things to Know

Pulling Rank: Atlanta Drive should be ready to go from the opening tee in its first match of the season. Atlanta's lineup will be the first in which all three players are ranked inside the top 25 of the Official World Golf Ranking. Cantlay (12th), Horschel (16th) and Thomas (21st) all won the FedExCup in Atlanta in recent years, as well.

Drive for Show: Players will see five par 5s on Tuesday night, ranging in distance from 572 yards to 729 yards. Four of the par 5s will play 600-plus yards, and Atlanta Drive will look to take advantage. The ATL trio ranked first in combined birdie-or-better rate at 50% at the par 5s on Tour last season. They’ll see back-to-back par 5s at Nos. 9 and 10, Riptide and Quick Draw, which could be a key stretch finishing Triples and beginning Singles.

Points on the Board: That’s the goal for NYGC, which now trails The Bay Golf Club and Los Angeles Golf Club by two points in the SoFi Cup Standings. They saw a few bounces go the other way in their first match against TBGC, but that experience playing at SoFi Center could pay dividends their second time out.

Singles Matchups

Cameron Young vs. Justin Thomas: The 2022 Presidents Cup teammates are on opposites sides now as they get Singles started at the 729-yard, par-5 Quick Draw. Their average driving distances were nearly identical last season, with Young at 308.9 yards and Thomas at 309.1. They’ll also take on the lengthy 535-yard, par-4 Alpine, where a right-to-left ball flight is preferred off the tee.

Matt Fitzpatrick vs. Billy Horschel: Fitzpatrick will be looking for his first Singles win after going 0-1-1 against Wyndham Clark. He has the experience edge, having played at SoFi Center two weeks ago. They’ll start at the par-4 Straight Up and finish at No. 14, Cliffhanger, a par-3 that yielded a pair of bogies last week.

COURSE PREVIEW: 15 Holes for NYGC vs. Atlanta Drive

Rickie Fowler vs. Patrick Cantlay: Fowler and Cantlay should be evenly-matched on both holes. Fowler had the better par-3 scoring average last season and will look to take advantage at Set in Stone, the par-3 12th. But Cantlay has a slight distance advantage entering No. 15, Pinery, a 601-yard par-5 finishing hole that hasn’t been played yet.

The Course

The layout for NYGC vs. Atlanta Drive includes several familiar holes and five new ones that we'll see for the first time, with five par 3s, five par 4s and five par 5s in total.

Two of the new holes are variations of layouts we’ve seen before, with some tweaks – No. 1, Temple, has the same risk-reward hourglass shape as The Spear but plays as a par 4 instead of a par 5. No. 6, the par-4 Loot on the Line, is in the same setting to the par-5 Pick Yer Plunder. It also presents three options off the tee and a chance for the hero shot up the middle of the fairway.

HOLE SPOTLIGHT

No. 12: Set In Stone, 183 Yards

This par-3 has served as the biggest difference-maker through two weeks, with two-point swings occurring both times it’s been played. TBGC threw the Hammer here with Wyndham Clark standing over a 7-foot birdie putt, which he drained to put his team ahead 3-0 over NYGC in week one. LAGC threw the Hammer at this hole last week vs. Jupiter Links after Sahith Theegala stuck his approach to 10 feet. Justin Rose converted for birdie as LAGC took a 3-0 lead and never looked back.

It’ll be a bit different this week in Singles play as it's playing shorter at 183 yards, with Fowler and Cantlay going head-to-head. Missing the green in the wrong spot will leave a very difficult chip shot and nerves will be a factor here in a close match.
