Alpine is a long par 4 that will likely require 210-plus-yard second shots into the green.

Kyle Porter previews the Monday night doubleheader as the playoffs approach.

Following a Presidents Day tripleheader and a New York-Jupiter Tuesday tilt, the action returns on Monday for a doubleheader featuring a new-look Los Angeles Golf Club team looking to keep its momentum going and a Boston Common Golf squad fighting to get back into the playoff picture.

As the season moves toward March, there are plenty of playoff storylines to watch so let’s take a look at the SoFi Cup Standings with just two weeks to go.

LAGC vs. New York Golf Club

New-look L.A.

The big news in this match is that Tony Finau will be filling in on a one-match contract for LAGC. With Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose out due to pre-existing commitments, Finau will make his TGL debut alongside Collin Morikawa and Sahith Theegala. That’s quite a player to add in the middle of the season!

Finau is ranked No. 18 in the Data Golf rankings and No. 26 in the Official World Golf Rankings and he joins an LAGC team that is one Justin Thomas hole-out away from being 3-0 and joining The Bay Golf Club at the top of the table. If LA wins vs. New York, it clinches a spot in the playoffs.

Still curious about NYGC

Yes, New York jumped inside the top four with a blowout of Jupiter Links Golf Club last Tuesday, but JLGC did not give a great account of themselves and NYGC will face tougher tests. This is a massive matchup for the New York squad, which won't be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss but would face an uphill battle.

Porter’s Picks

An LAGC victory here would secure a spot for them in the playoffs (and a spot for The Bay Golf Club, as well). Here’s a wild stat that could impact how this match plays out: NYGC is 0-for-15 on putts from 10-30 feet. While putting is not everything, I’m going to ride with arguably the best team in the league to date (even with a new-look leadoff man).

As for individual matchups, this is how I see them playing out.

Tony Finau vs. Cameron Young: Young is leading the league in driving distance, and I actually think he gets the best of Finau just because of the experience. As we’ve seen, playing in SoFi Center takes getting used to.

Collin Morikawa vs. Matt Fitzpatrick: A matchup of opposites. Morikawa is 2-0-2 in singles, and Fitzpatrick is 0-2-4.

Sahith Theegala vs. Rickie Fowler: I’m going with Theegala, mostly because they’ll end on the 729-yard par 5, Quick Draw, and Theegala has crushed on that hole so far, with an eagle in his first outing.

Boston Common Golf vs. Atlanta Drive GC

Boston’s playoff run?

Boston Common Golf is still very much in play for a playoff spot, especially if LAGC defeats NYGC on Monday evening. Right now, the top three seem somewhat set with The Bay Golf Club, LAGC and Atlanta Drive, but that fourth playoff spot is very, very live.

The Ballfrogs are just one point out of fourth in the SoFi Cup Standings and can rack up two points with a victory against an Atlanta Drive team that has proved to be a tough out. This is a big night for Boston Common Golf’s playoff hopes. If they lose, then NYGC and JLGC have to lose out for the Ballfrogs to have a chance.

Tee to green advantage

Here are some stats that actually play in Boston’s favor and may catch up with Atlanta Drive.

  • Driving accuracy: Boston (2nd) | Atlanta (6th)
  • Greens in regulation: Boston (2nd) | Atlanta (5th)

Atlanta Drive has been magic in its matchups so far, but that has included some wild putts and chips. Boston is building some consistency and has to get its first win at some point, right? Right?!

Porter’s Picks

I can’t believe I keep doing this, but I’m going with Boston Common Golf. Justin Thomas has been putting his brains out, which probably will not continue, and I’m going to bank on the team that has been better from tee to green overall, especially with Hideki Matsuyama and his excellent tee to green play in the lineup once again.

As for individual matchups, this is how I see them playing out.

Keegan Bradley vs. Justin Thomas: I never bet against Justin Thomas in singles.

Hideki Matsuyama vs. Billy Horschel: Horschel struggled a bit last time out, though his Atlanta Drive team eventually rebounded to get the win. Matsuyama was terrific in his debut, though, has not missed a green in regulation, and is my choice here.

Rory McIlroy vs. Patrick Cantlay: What a matchup here! I’ll say it’s the best of the three and McIlroy’s distance off the tee gets him the win in the end, especially since they end on a 536-yard par 5 (Riptide).
