Alpine is a long par 4 that will likely require 210-plus-yard second shots into the green.

There were only two matches on Monday evening in SoFi Center, but three teams clinched a spot in the playoffs.

Los Angeles Golf Club did not score a point through the first 11 holes and somehow beat New York Golf Club 5-4 in overtime. And in the nightcap, Atlanta Drive GC defeated Boston Common Golf 6-3 in a match that was a lot closer than it appears on paper.

The LAGC-Atlanta Drive double clinched playoff spots for both of those squads, as well as The Bay Golf Club, which is 3-0 on the season and plays Jupiter Links Golf Club tomorrow evening. No matter what happens, TBGC is in the playoffs.

That means there are three teams fighting for the fourth and final playoff spot. We’ll take a closer look at those below, as well as go over a few key takeaways from SoFi Center.

1. Wait … how did LAGC do that?

If you turned the opening match off after Cameron Young won the 10th hole over LAGC fill-in, Tony Finau, to take a 4-0 lead over LAGC, well, you'd be in for a surprise. LAGC had a 2% chance of winning after the 11th hole was split. But then Sahith Theegala hit a monstrous putt on the 12th, Finau won the 13th after throwing the Hammer and Collin Morikawa made a two on the 14th to tie it up and send it to overtime, where LAGC finished off the victory.

My big takeaway from all of this madness was how into it LAGC was. They have consistently had as much energy as any team in the league, and that was obvious again on Monday evening as they clinched that playoff spot.

“So fun to be a part of matches like this,” said Finau. “Momentum is a crazy thing in sports, and happy we ended up on top.”

2. Speaking of Finau!

He jumped in for Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood, who both had to miss the match because of previous committments. And he won arguably the most consequential hole of the match on the par-4 13th.

“The entire team … we all want to thank Tony because you see something and you never know if players buy into it,” said Morikawa. “It was all a question of whether we want -- the players, the 24 already playing, want to buy in, and we've all bought in, and I think you guys have seen that. But for someone like Tony to come out and say, ‘Yeah, I'm going to try it out and love it over the past few days, it's been a lot of fun.’”

3. Hammer, Hammer, Hammer

There will still be blowouts, but the entire way the matches feel has changed thanks to the Hammer adjustment. This was perhaps most obvious in the nightcap, when Atlanta Drive downed Boston Common Golf.

Going into the last two holes, Boston Common Golf trailed by just two points and still had two Hammers left. It lost the 14th hole (on a Hammer that Atlanta Drive threw) and thus the match did not look close by the final score. But it was close until the very end.

4. Playoff picture coming into focus

With TBGC, Atlanta Drive and LAGC all clinching spots on Monday, that means NYGC, Jupiter Links Golf Club and Boston Common Golf are fighting for that final playoff spot. JLGC has two matches left, including tomorrow against TBGC, but Boston Common Golf and NYGC each have just one, and it’s against each other.

There are plenty of scenarios, but JLGC controls the board. If they win their last two matches, they’re in. If they lose their last two, then the winner of NYGC-Boston Common Golf is in. If JLGC splits, that’s when it gets wonky. We’ll cross that bridge if we come to it, but it’s something to keep an eye out for on Tuesday evening.

Star of the Night

Billy Horschel

I hope to one day love anything as much as Billy Horschel loves playing TGL. There he is sprinting across SoFi Center to get Justin Thomas’ wedge, after Patrick Cantlay duffed a chip. Now he’s speaking with ESPN’s Marty Smith about how this format really lets his personality shine.

Oh, and there he is going bonkers over a sequence in which J.T. got up and down from 35 yards to maintain Atlanta's lead on the 13th hole of the match.

And there he is making a decisive 6-footer on the 14th hole before throwing the Hammer and forcing Hideki Matsuyama to make a putt to keep the match alive. Matsuyama didn’t, and there Horschel is throwing on the Dirty Birds chain again. Madness, just how he likes it.
