Alpine is a long par 4 that will likely require 210-plus-yard second shots into the green.

Kyle Porter recaps a dominant first win for New York Golf Club over Jupiter Links GC on Tuesday night.

Following a thrilling trio of Presidents Day matches, which thrived following a Hammer rule change – teams now have three Hammers to use throughout the 15-hole match – we got a more one-sided matchup on Tuesday night.

NYGC won seven of the first eight holes on JLGC, which could not recover the rest of the way and fell to 1-2 on the season as NYGC got its first victory, 10-3.

It was a victory NYGC absolutely had to have to keep from falling out of playoff contention as it now leapfrogs Boston Common Golf in the SoFi Cup Standings to fourth place and back in the race for the playoffs over the next few weeks.

Here are four takeaways from NYGC’s massive victory over JLGC.

1. JLGC struggled again

After getting blown out by Los Angeles Golf Club in the first week, JLGC rebounded to beat Boston Common Golf in its second match, but was back to its original ways, specifically in triples on Tuesday.

JLGC actually bogeyed four of the first eight holes on Tuesday (and may have made more if not for some conceded holes to NYGC), which meant NYGC did not have to do much to build a massive lead and coast to its first win.

2. The difference

The match turned on two things. The first was that JLGC had two penalty shots, and NYGC had none. It’s almost impossible to win a hole if you have a penalty stroke and the other team does not, and JLGC lost both of those holes.

The other is that NYGC hit 73% of greens in regulation while JLGC hit just 47%. As we have seen over the last month, SoFi Center can be challenging around the green (as it was for JLGC tonight), and NYGC did not need to do anything special with its putting to take down a JLGC squad that just could not find the green on its approach shots.

3. Ninety-nine?

The funniest moment of the match happened late when Tiger Woods hit a wedge on a nearly 200-yard shot. Woods heard someone say he had “ninety nine” to the hole, which is not uncommon for pros and caddies to say to one another even if they have 199 yards to the hole. It’s a bit of pro syntax, as it were, and it happens constantly out on tour.

If a player has 150 yards, his caddie will tell him, “You have 50 to the pin” because it’s obvious to the player that he doesn’t have, you know, only 50 yards. In this instance, because of the Screen and the moment, it wasn’t obvious to Tiger, and his teammates realized it too late to rescue him, which made for a moment of levity.

Afterward Tiger laughingly called it, “One of the most embarrassing things to ever happen. I can't believe that just happened.”

4. Needed NYGC momentum

Going into the season, I thought NYGC had a real chance to compete for the SoFi Cup. It had not gone well through two matches – NYGC had only netted two total points – but the floodgates opened here, and now not only has NYGC passed Boston Common Golf but also the team they beat tonight, JLGC, to sneak into fourth place, which would be the final playoff spot.

“We all knew that we were going to need it,” said Rickie Fowler. “I think we knew it was kind of an unspoken thing. We were going to need a big night at some point to at least kind of get the mojo going and the momentum the right way. Nice to do it tonight versus waiting a match or two.”

Star of the Night

Tiger Woods – It was obviously not the best golf he’s ever played, but he was great in talking about his mother, Tida, who passed away last week, and it was very cool to see his teammates (and everyone in the arena) rally around him.

“I hadn't hit a golf ball since I played with the President and just put everything away and shut it off," Tiger said. "I had a really hard time getting here and then reliving all the moments that we've had, my mom, how excited she was to have Charlie drive her here. So those are some great moments and great memories. It's been a hard process.”
