Let’s play two!

The first-ever Monday night doubleheader in TGL presented by SoFi begins at 5 p.m. and features another first for the league as Los Angeles Golf Club goes to-to-toe with New York Golf Club in the opening match.

With LAGC’s Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood unable to go due to prior commitments, the team is set to welcome Tony Finau on a one-match contract. The league’s rules state that teams can select a new player if one of their would-be starters is unable to compete, as long as it’s a PGA TOUR member in good standing.

Enter Finau.

“We were aware that Justin and Tommy would take this week abroad to spend time with family, which created a unique opportunity for us to have Tony join LAGC for this match,” said Neal Hubman, Co-Founder and President of LAGC. “Tony is one of the most well-liked players in the game and has dedicated significant time and energy to make golf more accessible and available to youth, which aligns with LAGC’s efforts. We look forward to welcoming him to the LAGC family and helping us secure a playoff berth.”

The second match at SoFi Center features Boston Common Golf against Atlanta Drive GC at 9 p.m. ET. Boston is still alive in the postseason hunt with one point on the season, but the Ballfrogs need a win Tuesday to have a realistic chance. Atlanta is still looking good for the playoffs, in third place just one point behind Los Angeles.

Both matches will air on ESPN2 and can be streamed on ESPN+.

Tony Time

Finau, a six-time PGA TOUR winner who’s played on five combined U.S. Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams, enters the fray at a critical point for LAGC. Los Angeles can guarantee a playoff spot with a win and would love to wrap that up Monday.

New York is now in line for a postseason appearance, sitting fourth in the SoFi Cup standings after a 10-3 win over Jupiter last week. NYGC will send the same squad out Monday with Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick and Rickie Fowler.

Singles Matchups

Tony Finau vs. Cameron Young: These two should put on a driving clinic and they couldn’t start at a better hole, The Spear, which feature’s one of TGL’s best tests off the tee.

Collin Morikawa vs. Matt Fitzpatrick: You don’t see either player out of position very often. Morikawa is unbeaten in Singles at 2-0-2 while Fitzpatrick is still looking for his first win.

Sahith Theegala vs. Rickie Fowler: They open at a short par-3, where Theegala’s strong irons play gives him a slight edge – on paper, at least. Fowler has been a bulldog in Singles at 2-1-3. It’s anyone’s game at the par-5 finishing hole, Pin Oak.

Oh So Close

While Boston is in must-win mode and sitting last in the standings, two of the three losses came by just one point and one was in Overtime. There’s plenty of fight left in the Ballfrogs, who are second in driving accuracy and second in greens in regulation.

Atlanta is just one point away from a 3-0 start after a 6-5 loss to The Bay last week and has something to prove as well.

Singles Matchups

Keegan Bradley vs. Justin Thomas: Bradley has won four consecutive Singles holes and Thomas hasn’t lost a hole yet at 3-0-3. This should be a real treat, starting at the par-5 Quick Draw.

Hideki Matsuyama vs. Billy Horschel: Matsuyama was 3 for 3 on fairways hit in his debut and will like the look of the par-4 11th, Alpine. No. 14, On the Rocks, is all about precision at just 134 yards.

Rory McIlroy vs. Patrick Cantlay: As two of the best players in the world, it should be a great matchup. McIlroy and Cantlay will finish on Riptide, a long par 5 that ends with an island green.

The Course

We’ve got two unique layouts on tap for Monday, both of which include Hatchet. This is only the second and third appearance for the 463-yard par 4. Flex is also in the rotation for both and has given players plenty of trouble this season. Each match will feature five par 3s, five par 4s and five par 5s.

Hole Spotlight

Quick Draw, Par 5, 729 Yards

While this par-5 is listed at 729 yards, there’s still a chance to go for the green in two by taking aim at the riskier plateau fairway to the right.

That’s exactly what Wyndham Clark did last week when he gave himself a great angle off the tee and stuck it inside 10 feet from 201 yards out, sinking the eagle putt to deliver a win for The Bay Golf Club in dramatic fashion.
