Kyle Porter previews the Finals Series showdown between Atlanta and New York as the two top squads vie for the SoFi Cup.
Atlanta Drive took down New York Golf Club in a thrilling first match in the best-of-three Finals Series on Monday evening at SoFi Center, and they did so with two points in the final two holes to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 6-5 victory.
After an early Hammer in Triples, the two teams ended the first nine holes tied at 2-2. Fireworks started immediately in Singles as Cameron Young beat Justin Thomas on the 10th hole with a Hammer thrown to take a 4-2 lead.
Atlanta Drive responded as Billy Horschel made a 11-footer on a Hammer throw to tie the score back up at 4-4.
NYGC won the 13th before it got strategic on the 14th. Horschel hit his tee shot to 5ft and threw the Hammer. Rickie Fowler had previously hit his shot to 9ft, and NYGC declined, not wanting to risk losing two points on the hole.
It came down to the final hole between Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele. Cantlay won when Schauffele lipped out a putt to tie and send the match to Overtime.
The good news for him and NYGC? There’s always tomorrow. The two teams are back on Tuesday at 7 p.m. on ESPN for the second of the best-of-three Finals. If NYGC wins, the teams will play immediately after that in a decider for the SoFi Cup.

The only difference in the Match 2 lineups – which have already been set – is that Young will swap places with Schauffele and will face Cantlay in the last matchup. Schauffele will play Thomas in the first of the three Singles matchups.
“This was probably one of the more serious matches that we've played,” said Schauffele. “You can tell everyone was trying to win, and them being up one is a big advantage, but in my eyes and I'm sure these boys and our team, we lost our first two matches, so this technically isn't something that we've haven't already faced this exact season. It'll be a fun go tomorrow.”

Porter’s Picks
I’m picking Atlanta Drive to win the SoFi Cup (I picked them to win Match 1 on Monday). I’ve been impressed with NYGC’s run to the Finals, but Atlanta's team chemistry combined with the elite approach play has everything coming up Dirty Birds.
As for individual matchups on Monday night for Match 2, this is how I see them playing out.
Justin Thomas vs. Xander Schauffele: The matchups change slightly for the second match of the Finals. In the first matchup, we get two two-time major champions and two players who lost their Singles matchups on Monday. Thomas has been so money on the GreenZone all year, and though he cooled off just a bit, I think he gets it done against Schauffele on Tuesday.
Billy Horschel vs. Rickie Fowler: Horschel remains on a tear, winning three points for Atlanta Drive in Singles against Fowler on Monday. He was a menace, pouring in putts from all over the yard and continuing to provide a spark for this Atlanta Drive team. I suspect we’ll get more of the same on Tuesday. But yes, Billy, I’ll continue to pick against you by taking Fowler.
Patrick Cantlay vs. Cameron Young: This matchup, as was the case on Monday, will likely decide the overall match. Young was a quiet tour de force on Monday evening and has been solid all year for this NYGC team. They finish on a 554-yard par 5, where Young will have an advantage off the tee. I think he cashes it in and helps NYGC force a third match at 9 p.m. for the SoFi Cup.
