Key Takeaways As The Bay Golf Club Goes Back On Top
Kyle Porter recaps the final match of the regular season and looks ahead to the start of the playoffs on March 17.
In the final matchup of the regular season, playoff-bound Atlanta Drive GC beat Jupiter Links Golf Club 9-1 in a match the Drive never trailed.
One moment stands out from the middle of the match. Trailing 3-1 on the 8th hole, Tom Kim was chipping from 18 feet. His ball rolled right at the hole, and he turned around to celebrate with the crowd. Except the ball lipped out at the very end.
If there’s a more appropriate way to sum up JLGC’s night in SoFi Center, I don’t know it.
Let’s take a look at a few takeaways from the last match of the regular season and take a quick glance ahead to the playoffs, which begin March 17 with the Semifinals.
1. No playoffs for Jupiter, Boston
Tiger’s JLGC team won just one match, and he said his son, Charlie, gave him a hard time after today’s match for only winning 10 holes all season. JLGC actually won one more match than Boston Common Golf, which went 0-4-1 on the season.
PLAYOFF SCHEDULE: Semifinal Matchups Announced
“I tell everyone how much more competitive than I thought it was going to be,” said Tom Kim of JLGC. “When you get here, you see the players, and you don't want to lose. You're not playing for yourself, you're playing for your team, you're playing for your club, and that's something we don't get to do when we play normal golf."
“I think that camaraderie that we've built is something really cool, and I think the coolest part about this league is having teammates. Other than winning and despite all that, I think being able to rely on a teammate is really, really cool.”
2. Atlanta Drive Impress Again
Sometimes golf seems complex, but in most instances it’s not. It wasn’t on Tuesday as Atlanta Drive simply hit the ball better and hit their approach shots closer than JLGC. A sampling of the statistics.
- Atlanta Drive GC had 4 putts between 10-30 feet (all four for birdie), JLGC had just 1
- Atlanta Drive GC hit 9 of 15 greens in regulation, JLGC hit just 7
Match play golf normally boils down to who hit the ball closer to the hole, and that was absolutely the case on Tuesday evening in perhaps as obvious a way as we’ve seen all season.
3. Playoff Predictions
The four best teams in the league are now officially matched up for the playoffs, which start in two weeks. LAGC against New York Golf Club in the No. 1 vs. No. 4 matchup and Atlanta Drive vs. The Bay Golf Club on the other side of the bracket. The format will be one match to move on, and two things stand out.
The first is how much players have cared about the regular season, which tells me that’s going to be even more heightened during the playoffs. I think the two Semifinals are going to be truly thrilling in ways beyond what we have seen so far.

The second is that I have no idea who’s going to win. NYGC had LAGC on the ropes a few weeks ago and even as the No. 4 seed is incredibly dangerous. The Bay Golf Club beat Atlanta Drive 6-5 on Presidents Day, and anything could happen there.
4. Star of the Night
Lucas Glover
He didn’t miss a fairway, he didn’t miss a green and he did all of it coming in off of very little action throughout the season. Glove has quietly been really solid in his two matches this year, and it will be interesting to see how Atlanta Drive uses him during the playoffs.
“If I get to play, I'll be excited,” said Glover. “If I don't, I'll be excited and probably be here to support. Just want to do well and want the team to do well.”
