Get ready for more drama, variety, and excitement at SoFi Center in Season 2 of TGL presented by SoFi...

When New York and Atlanta Drive tee off on Sunday, Dec. 28 at 3pm ET, eagle-eyed watchers will spot some exciting new changes for the second season of TGL.

It's been a busy offseason, building on the momentum from Season 1 with multiple enhancements to SoFi Center’s field of play, virtual holes, broadcast and in-venue experience.

SEASON 2 SCHEDULE: Check out the full schedule for the upcoming season

Based on data, analytics and player feedback from Season 1, the updates include:

  • Working with Beau Welling Design, a renovation of the GreenZone was completed to create a larger green, different slopes, more hole locations and larger bunkers
  • Updated hole designs, elevating risk-reward challenges
  • Customized hole designs for each of the six TGL teams
  • Improved graphics within virtual holes
  • Larger hitting boxes
  • Relocated ball-tracking camera towers for improved sightlines

Let's break down each of the updates in more detail...

The GreenZone Renovation

Putting Surface

The bottom line: The green is bigger. That means more putts, more drama and, if you're an Atlanta Drive fan, more Billy Ho celebrations.

The putting surface has increased by 38% from 3,800 to 5,270 square feet, closer to the average green size on the PGA TOUR (5,701 square feet).

There's more options for pin placements too, with the larger putting surface now featuring 12 hole locations, up from seven in Season 1.

Two Full Swing Virtual Greens under the turf are now 1,250 square feet in total with 608 actuators to morph the putting surface (up from 1,215 square feet, 567 actuators in Season 1).

The larger Virtual Greens add 60 more square feet of adjustable putting surface for more variety and undulations to the green’s bottom tiers going into the new season.

The Turntable

The knoll at the highest point of the GreenZone is 18” lower than Season 1, allowing for improved viewing for fans in the greenside seats and more natural slopes on the upper portion of the putting surface.

In addition to the knoll adjustment, the slope of a section of the chipping area has been regraded, allowing for a greater variety of approach shots (for example: bump-and-run, lower or higher shots).

Bunkers

The smallest greenside bunker has been removed, while the two remaining bunkers are 50% larger and include revetted layers of turf to create distinct vertical, greenside walls.

The changes to the bunkers will ensure they still challenge players and continue to build drama and excitement in the greenside hazards.

The Holes

From graphic updates to custom team holes, here's what to expect in Season 2...

Team Holes

New for Season 2, each team will have an official Team Hole to play in their matches.

Six holes from the Season 1 library have been changed and updated, with localized backdrops and terrain added to make them feel like each team's home course.

Updated Graphics

TGL and Full Swing upgraded the game engine software in the virtual world to Unity 6, which leverages the engine’s High-Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP) to deliver more realistic and immersive virtual golf environments.

As well as the graphics updates, several of TGL’s custom-designed holes have been tweaked in advance of Season 2. That means new tee boxes, angles, and added features to impact strategy and risk-reward decisions for the teams.

Stay tuned, the updated holes will be rolled out on TGL social channels before the start of the season.

Front and Back Boxes

There have been modifications to the hitting areas in front of the screen, making them bigger for Season 2 to provide more space and to improve divot management of the real grass.

The enlarged sand trays also allow for a larger bunker lip that can be raised or lowered at the front of the bunker, increasing difficulty for fairway bunker shots. That should be fun for the players.

Fan Sightlines

As well as the adjustments to the GreenZone knoll, two tracing towers have been removed from the field of play, relocating camera sensors into the ceiling. That move helps to improve fan sightlines from the lower bowl and greenside seating inside SoFi Center.
