It’s not quite desperation time, but neither Los Angeles Golf Club nor Jupiter Links want to be the first two-loss team in Season 2 of TGL presented by SoFi.

Jupiter can draw some positives from its loss to New York Golf Club: For the first time in team history, Jupiter Links took the first lead in a match. It also nearly equaled its total of par 5 holes won from all last season (three) in just one match (two).

HOW TO WATCH: Jupiter Links vs. Los Angeles Golf Club

Los Angeles, on the other hand, is looking for a return to the early form that vaulted them to the No. 1 seed in last year’s playoffs.

LAGC’s par 4 woes over?

Through the first three matches of the inaugural season of TGL, Los Angeles Golf Club was excellent on par 4 holes, posting a record (W-L-H) of 7-3-5 on those holes. Their win-loss record as a team mirrored that, picking up a pair of wins and an overtime loss to Atlanta Drive GC. Since, it’s been a bit of a struggle on par 4s – a 3-8-9 record in LAGC’s last four matches on par 4s. A split record of 2-2-0, including an opening match defeat to Boston Common Golf in Season 2, has followed.

The early stretch of Tuesday’s match offers promise for a turnaround, though. The first two par 4s scheduled for play are The Claw (Hole 1) and Alpine (Hole 6). Over both seasons, LAGC has a combined record of 6-1-3 on those holes, while Jupiter Links is winless (0-3-2). In fact, holes 1 through 7 on Tuesday significantly favor LAGC when it comes to course history. LAGC has a hole win rate of 52% as a team on the holes in play on that stretch (13-3-9), while Jupiter’s rate is just 11% (2-9-7).

Course history isn’t stone-written prophecy, but those are significant numbers to consider when making a Triples wager for Tuesday’s match.

Putting problems

Regardless of hole type, LAGC will need to putt better than they did against Boston in the season opener if they want to get into the win column. LA was just 1-for-4 putting from four to twelve feet in the match, a range they thrived in for most of last season (54.1% make rate). As a team, LAGC holed just 24 feet of putts in the loss to Boston, their second-lowest total in a match to date.

As the putters have performed, so has LAGC. That’s typically the case in TGL, but it’s especially pronounced for this club. In its wins, Los Angeles has made 73% of its putts from four to ten feet. When it has lost (regulation or OT), that rate is a paltry 25%.

The Last Toll

One of the most anticipated elements of Tuesday’s match is the debut of The Last Toll, Gil Hanse’s dystopian par 3 featuring the remains of a bridge among an urban wasteland. While the hole can be set up to play more than 240 yards, it’s 205 yards on the Digital Caddie this week. Players have a multitude of shot options in their attempt to avoid the damaged bridge.

Kevin Kisner and Sahith Theegala will be hitting the tee shots on The Last Toll. It's an advantage on paper for Los Angeles as Theegala has averaged 30’8” average proximity on approach shots from 200-225 yards, about 11 feet closer than Kisner. Jupiter didn’t win a single par 3 in its head-to-head matchup with LAGC last season (0-2-3).

Recipe at Stinger

There have now been eight players to hit the tee shot on Stinger. According to those early returns, a minuscule launch angle seems to be the number to aim for. Three players – Michael Thorbjornsen, Chris Gotterup and Matt Fitzpatrick – have hit their tee shots with a launch angle under 3 degrees. All three went on to win the hole. Meanwhile, the other five with a launch angle higher than three degrees are winless (0-3-2) on the hole.

Fitzpatrick became the first player to hit driver off the tee at Stinger and win the hole, doing so last week. His tee shot registered a launch angle of 0.1 degrees.

Unwanted Singles Streak for Homa

It’s time for one of the most popular players in pro golf to get off the Singles schneid. Max Homa enters this week’s proceedings with a career record of 0-4-4 on Singles holes after dropping Loot on the Line and tying Cenote with Fitzpatrick last week. Of all the players in TGL with six or more Singles holes played, Homa is the only player without a hole win.

Homa will draw Justin Rose, who went winless in Singles against Rory McIlroy in LAGC’s season opener, in the leadoff spot on Tuesday evening.

Justin Ray's Prediction: Los Angeles Golf Club to win (-188 at FanDuel, odds accurate at time of publication).
