The British contingent at TGL includes 2022 U.S. Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick, one of the fast-rising stars on the PGA TOUR.
Sheffield-born Fitzpatrick became the first Englishman to win the U.S. Open since 2013 (fellow TGLer Justin Rose took the title that year) when he held off Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris to take his first career major.
As part of the initial roster of TGL players, Fitzpatrick joins fellow Englishman Rose and an all-star roster of participants that includes Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas, among others.
Despite being on the PGA TOUR scene for a few years already, Fitzpatrick is still just 28 and he’s excited to help bring the game of golf to a new audience with TGL.
“While teeing it up with the world’s best has been a highlight of my career so far, this opportunity to compete in TGL is taking that experience to a whole other level. TGL combines world-class players in a team format within an arena environment for a global television audience. With a formula like that, it will create another platform for fans, especially young fans, to see our sport shine on a new stage,” said Fitzpatrick.
Since winning his first major, Fitzpatrick has kicked on and added another title to his collection when he once again fended off an elite field to win the 2023 RBC Heritage. As a two-time Ryder Cup veteran, he’s no stranger to the team format and will bring a wealth of experience to his TGL club when the season gets started in early 2025.
“Blending global superstars with the next generation of emerging champions like Matthew Fitzpatrick is foundational to forming the six TGL teams,” said TGL CEO Mike McCarley. “Fitzpatrick is a major champion who will be a stalwart of the European Ryder Cup Team for the next decade. Adding a young, world-class player from England, who has won consistently all around the world, expands the global reach of committed TGL players ranging from Australia, Northern Ireland, and the U.S.”
