Kyle Porter previews New York Golf Club’s matchup with Atlanta Drive GC, as NYGC looks to bounce back from their Week 1 loss.

For the first time at TGL presented by SoFi, we will see a team that has already played a match in New York Golf Club – which got beat by The Bay Golf Club 9-2 in Week 1 – takes on Atlanta Drive GC on Tuesday at 7 ET on ESPN.

The matchup represents the return of an NYGC team looking for a first win and also the debut of a compelling Atlanta Drive squad featuring Justin Thomas, Billy Horschel and Patrick Cantlay.

Let’s take a look at four things I’m looking forward to as Week 3 gets going at SoFi Center.

COURSE PREVIEW: Check Out the 15 Holes for Tuesday

Cameron Young, difference maker?

Cameron Young will start in place of Xander Schauffele on Tuesday. While Schauffele was solid in Week 1 and is one of the two best players in the world right now (OWGR), Young should thrive in TGL. Speed off the tee is often prioritized in this format, depending on the architecture of the hole, and Young is a big hitter.

NYGC will be looking for a spark. In that opening matchup against The Bay Golf Club, it lost five of the first six holes and couldn't recover. If there's another slow start vs. Atlanta Drive, then NYGC could find itself at the bottom of the SoFi Cup Standings at 0-2 with just three matches left in its season (top four teams make the playoffs). Young is leading off for NYGC on Hole 1 and could provide that spark.

JT’s wizardry

It’s no secret that Justin Thomas prides himself on having a vast array of golf shots and JT's teammate Billy Horschel told me before the season started that you’re probably going to see guys trying some riskier shots than normal.

That’s a great thing for fans and Thomas is somebody who I envision doing exactly that, especially around the GreenZone. We could see some JT magic.

Hammer time?

I keep talking about it, but I’m really excited to see how the strategy plays out late in a close match between two good teams. We haven’t seen it over the first two weeks, but we did see a sneak peek in a video the creators over at Good Good made this week while playing at SoFi Center. There was some legitimate Game Theory of, “If we throw this Hammer now, they have to accept, but they might do this in return.”

That’s fun! It’s different!

And it’s something that I’m itching to see when the pros tee it up on Tuesday.

Can Atlanta Join The Pace Setters?

The two west coast teams have now established themselves as the leaders of the league with convincing victories in their first matchups. It’s not just that both teams won, but how they won that made me believe they will contend for the title this year.

Even if NYGC wins this week, I don’t think I can quite put them in the ranks of LAGC and TBGC because of their early loss, but Atlanta – with Thomas, Horschel, Cantlay and Lucas Glover making up its team of flushers – can absolutely join the conversation with a convincing win.

Porter’s Picks

I’m still bullish on this NYGC team overall despite their Week 1 performance and I think they bounce back with a victory here that’s closer than either of the first two matchups.

Experience will be a factor. It sounds silly after just three weeks, but almost every player has mentioned how unique and different it is playing in SoFi Center. Atlanta will be experiencing that for the first time, while Rickie Fowler and Matt Fitzpatrick have played there already, which should benefit their team.

As for individual matchups, this is how I see them playing out.

Cam Young vs. Justin Thomas: This one is intriguing to me. I really like both of these players, but I’ll give the slight nod to JT, just because of his short game, and we have seen a lot of short pitch shots over the first two weeks in SoFi Center.

Matt Fitzpatrick vs. Billy Horschel: It’s Fitzpatrick here. This is less about head-to-head ability and more about the fact that he has the experience of having played a match under the lights before. Experience is key.

Rickie Fowler vs. Patrick Cantlay: Fowler. He was the only NYGC player to score a point in Singles last time around, and while he won’t be the only one this time around, I think he keeps the momentum going against Cantlay.
